YOU'VE HEARD THE NEWS...
VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTS RECOMMENDED FOR ALL
SALE - 25% OFF VITAMIN D RANGE

In light of the news on the new recommendations for wider Vitamin D supplementation, we are pleased to offer 25% off Vitamin D for a limited period.
Vitamin D is only found in a handful of foods. The major source of vitamin D is sunlight, which being a rare occurrence in the UK means supplements are a safe and convenient way to keep vitamin D levels topped up. Our vitamin D supplements use the body's preferred form - vitamin D3 - which is the same form that the body naturally produces in response to sunlight.

Vitamin D and Crohn's Disease

Vitamin D may protect against Crohn's Disease
An interesting article from Higher Nature

by Holly Taylor BSc(Hons) DipCNM MBANT

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects approximately one in every 400 people. While there is no cure, treatments focus on controlling the inflammation, relieving symptoms and prolonging remission time.

The condition is thought to stem from a problem with the immune system that causes an inflammatory response to the bacteria living in the gut. Now, results from Canada suggest that low levels of vitamin D, which is important for the immune system, may increase the risk of developing Crohn’s disease.

The scientists looked at the effects of vitamin D on two genes linked to Crohn’s disease. The beta defensin 2 gene is important for producing substances that fight microbes, while the NOD2 gene helps to alert the immune system to detect the presence of invaders.

During the study, the researchers discovered that if the NOD2 gene is deficient or defective, which is common in Crohn’s disease, the sufferer may have more difficulty tackling invaders in the intestinal tract. More importantly, they found that vitamin D is central to switching on the genes and, therefore, may help reduce the risk of Crohn’s.

The scientists concluded their paper by saying: “Siblings of patients with Crohn’s disease that haven’t yet developed the disease might be well advised to make sure they’re vitamin D sufficient.”

NICE HRT PROTOCOL

NOVEMBER 12th 2015
NICE has just produced it's first protocol for the menopause. Surprisingly HRT is now back in favour despite being rejected as a treatment just over a decade ago, due to increased risks of breast cancer and heart issues. So great was the concern after the original studies, that many GP's suddenly stopped patients HRT leaving them with no viable alternative, and resulting in an influx of distressed patients to our alternative health clinics. Fortunately for them, and patients today seeking a more natural, drug free approach, we have had very comprehensive protocols in place for many years. Each patient will be treated for their individual and particular issues, but the protocol will cover all the usual symptoms such as hot flushes, "foggy brain", insomnia, osteoporosis and even the increased risk of breast cancer.
As well as using a more natural, drug free approach, patients will also benefit from an holistic discussion including the importance of stress management, exercise and a healthy diet. Contact me or your nearest registered alternative medical practitioner for more details of how we can support you through a healthy menopause.

OCTOBER 5TH

Candida
Have you got Candida? About one person in three suffers badly from Candida overgrowth.
Answer the following questions to find out if that may be you.
Do you suffer from some of the following?

fatigue
bloating (wind)
food allergies
carbohydrate craving
vaginitis (thrush)
anxiety/depression
impaired memory
poor concentration
a "foggy" brain with feelings of unreality
cystitis/urethritis
menstrual irregularities
loss of libido
stiff and painful joints
muscle pain
indigestion
diarrhoea/constipation
inhalant allergies
chemical sensitivities
catarrh
hay fever
sinusitis
persistent cough
cardiac arrhythmia
discoloured nails
acne and other skin eruptions
earaches, headaches, and dizziness

If you have answered yes to four or five of the above then Candida overgrowth may well be the problem that is spoiling your life. The bad news is that as you probably already know from experience, Candida overgrowth is not easy to get under control, and many doctors don't acknowledge the problem. However, the good news is that with patience, persistence and the right support, you can get it under control - and get your life back!
Treatment can start immediately, based on your symptoms, and is a combination of dietary changes, herbal supplements and homeopathy. Or if you have any doubts as to whether it is in fact Candida that is causing your problems, we can test before starting treatment (bio resonance /saliva or blood). Email me at barefoothomoeopath@yahoo.co.uk for the leaflet
'Could Candida be causing yourhealth problems?' or telephone me on 01323 842633 to make an appointment, or discuss the best course of action for you.

September 30th 2015

Flu season approaches.
Yes it's the time to start taking your homoeopathic flu tablets again - Just email me with your name, address email address and telephone number and request your flu tablets for 2015/2016. For a small cost and with no side effects it can make so much difference to avoid a nasty bout of flu, particularly if, like many people, you don't like to use the conventional flu vaccination (remember last year when they said 'sorry we got the wrong strain so you weren't protected'). email me now - to beat the queue and be prepared! (last years price of £20 for a whole seasons supply and postage free on orders received by the end of October 2015).
And. . . . Have you thought about vitamin D yet?
As winter nears and days get shorter, interest in vitamin D will inevitably increase and decisions will need to be made. Am I deficient? Do I need to supplement? What about my family? What’s the best type?
It’s widely acknowledged that many of us are deficient or have sub-optimal levels of vitamin D and there is an increasing amount of research showing its importance across a wide range of biological activity, not just for strong bones. In fact even people in sunnier countries exercising outdoors can be deficient, so regular supplementation is essential for many all year round.

September 14th 2015 - Back At School.

How to keep your children healthy and functioning at their full potential:-
A well balanced diet is key to good health but getting kids and teenagers to eat one can be hard work at best. School dinners or lunch-box? Whichever you choose, add a quality multivitamin and mineral which has been carefully formulated to contain all essential nutrients at significantly higher levels than other brands in a one-a-day tablet . Vitamins D, K and E as well as B vitamins can all be found in Multi Essentials, without any of the binders and fillers that are used in many popular brands.
Build their brains
There is so much research behind the effects of omega 3 fatty acids on the brain, particularly in children. In a Danish trial, children who were supplementing with a pure and stable fish oil, rich in omega-3, showed improvements in memory, concentration and social behaviour at school. There is both a specific children’s formula, Eskimo-3 ® Little Cubs which is specially formulated to include omega 3, 6 and 9 to meet the needs of children under 12, and a targeted brain support formula, Eskimo-3® Brainsharp which includes CoQ10, GLA and vitamin D which all support cognitive systems.
Boost their immunity
It’s well known that the first few weeks of school usually result in germs being passed from student to student and the latest bug striking down individuals one by one! Certainly not ideal when you’re all set for another year of cramming your mind full of facts and figures. But there are things you can do to protect children against the dreaded back-to-school bugs and support their immune systems:
Vitamin D is the hormone that we produce in response to sunlight. But as I write this, sunshine and therefore vitamin D is scarce! Vitamin D is well noted for its contribution to the immune system so supplementing as autumn approaches is a smart idea. Try D3 Lemon Melts, delicious lemon-flavoured melting tablets which provide 2000iu of vitamin D.
Although probiotics aren’t the first thing that spring to mind when you’re thinking about immune support, when you consider that 70% of our immune system lives in the gut then it suddenly seems very relevant to have a well-functioning digestive system! Ultra Probioplex ND Capsules, a non-dairy probiotic which provide pure strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis to support optimal microflora in the small and large intestines.
And finally . . . Support Their Immune System.
Beta glucans have been well researched for triggering immune defences and acting as a biological response modifier. ImmunoBlast combine s beta 1-3/1-6 glucan along with vitamins A, C, D and E to ward off the sniffles before you realise you have them!
For individual homoeopathic and nutritional support for your child, telephone or email me today to request an appointment. Or for further details or to order any of the above products email me now.

Headlines - ANTIBIOTIC APOCALYPSE & EXAM STRESS UP 200% see blogs below!

May 11th - EXAM STRESS?

Try this three pronged protocol (it can also work for general stress and improving brain function)!

Rises in the number of patients seeking help for exam stress and anxiety have been reported over the last two years by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. We know all too well that prolonged or acute exposure to stressors is extremely detrimental to our health and will cause both short-term symptoms which may interfere with exam performance, as well as long term complications which have a knock on effect on other areas of our health.

Don’t reach breaking point before doing something about it!
Sadly the majority of individuals who are experiencing this will only seek help when they feel they are at breaking point, or worse have already passed it. But if you feel like everything is getting on top of you and you’re nearing the edge it’s important to know there are plenty of natural and safe options to support you whilst keeping you healthy.

1. Relax

April 15th 2015 A taste of Summer (or hay fever strikes again)!

As temperatures top 21 degrees today - it's great for gardeners and sun worshipers, that is unless you are one of the many sufferers of seasonally affected allergic rhinitis ( hay fever ). Itchy red eyes and throats and runny noses aren't much fun, and anti-histamines are all very well, but like all orthodox drugs they have side-effects. Because they can make you drowsy they are far from an ideal treatment for school pupils, drivers or gardeners for that matter. The best solution to beat hay fever is a homeopathic treatment, which can give you relief from the symptoms of hay fever now and throughout the summer, without side effects, and can prevent a re-occurrence of hay fever next year! So email or telephone me now to book an appointment - and Spring back into action!
P.S.
If you want to get an idea of what is your hay fever trigger, you may like to consider a QX scan which will check your reaction to hundreds of different allergy causing agents, from a wide variety of pollens, air pollutants, food additives and chemicals to common foods themselves, including wheat, dairy, yeast and hundreds more (scans cost £65)

Blog. Eskimo fish oil

January 28th 2015

There has always been an endless stream of research about
omega-3 fish oil and its effects on our health. There seems to
be an article almost weekly outlining some new findings which
show dramatic impacts, good and bad, on our health. So
with such an abundance of information, it’s hard to separate
fact from fiction and establish what the key benefits of this
supposed wonder nutrient are.

Infant attention and learning
Research has suggested omega-3s can increase attention
levels well into an infant’s second year of life, and put them up
to 2 months ahead of those who have lower levels of omega-3.
Little Cubs Eskimo 3 (tutti frutti) is available for 1-12 year olds for the
discount price of only £10.95 + £2.95 p&p just email me now with delivery details.

Depression
Research indicates that depression is linked to low levels of
EPA in the brain and that supplementing with omega-3 with
a high EPA concentration can be used for the protection and
treatment of depression. Some studies have even showed
high EPA formulas to be as effective as the common antidepressant
drug, fluoxetine.
Alzheimer’s and the brain
Shrinking brain volume can be a sign of Alzheimer’s but
research has showed that supplementing with an omega-3
fish oil can increase brain volume and decrease the amount of
dying brain cells. Omega-3s have long been used for protection
against developing Alzheimer’s due to their anti-inflammatory
properties and support for nerve connections, but research
has also showed that they omega-3s, in particular DHA, could
also improve memory function. The best source of fish oil I
have found for this is Eskimo 3 Brainsharp (pure Omega 3 fish oil
with Omega-6 9 and CoQ10). email me now with your delivery details to order
at the special price of just £30.60 + £2.95 p&p.

Arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis)
EPA and DHA within omega-3 have been shown to promote
anti-inflammatory chemicals which slow and reduce the
inflammation process, theoretically meaning less pain and
swelling for rheumatoid arthritics. In some studies the effects
of omega-3 have been so impressive that subjects have been
able to lower their NSAIDS dosage.

Inflammation
Mediators that are derived from omega-3s are antiinflammatory
so research has investigated whether the intake
of fish oil, especially EPA and DHA, can lead to replacing the
acid in cell membranes which creates pro-inflammatory
mediators and accelerates the chronic inflammation process.
Therefore effectively slowing the inflammation process by
decreasing production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
To help achieve a balanced mind and body I recommend
Eskimo Advanced EPA (high EPA fish oil). email me now with your delivery
details to order at the discount price of £27.50 + £2.95 p&p.
Caution - Not recommended for haemophilliacs. Consult your doctor if on anti-coagulant medication or have a medical condition.

June 5th 2014

Have you heard about the “wonder spice” Curcumin?
Curcumin is not new, in fact it's one of the active ingredients in turmeric, and has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for many centuries. It’s what gives turmeric its yellow colour and its traditional use has focused on supporting inflammation, immune health and cognitive function, as well as skin and digestive health.
However, it now has over 5,600 peer-reviewed clinical studies to its name, and has become perhaps the most widely-studied phytochemical in modern science! Significant research has identified possible anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-allergic, antibacterial and anti-viral activities of this fascinating compound.
I'm currently trialling this supplement with a limited number of patients for just £19.95 instead of the usual price of £25.36, but if you want to take part you will need to email me straight away!
If you’d like any more information on Curcumin and its intriguing health benefits, including research into it's effects on Alzheimer’s Disease, as an anti-inflammatory, and anti- cancer properties, simply email me for the technical report.

HOMEOPATHY: THE EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO ANTIBIOTICS

February 2014
With so many people suffering this year from respiratory infections, I thought it would be useful to publish this timely reminder of the tremendous benefit of maintaining a healthy immune system with diet, exercise and homeopathy rather than relying on antibiotics with all their disadvantages. Sadly there is not room here for the full article - which goes on to talk about the increasingly recognised advantages of homeopathy rather than anti-biotics in the treatment of farm animals. However, you can read the full article on this months newsletter if you register for a copy now.
Article
By Dr MUKESH BATRA
We are all exposed to infections. To cull an example — all of us dread to see someone sneezing away to glory in a bus, or train, or at the shopping mall, or the theatre. As millions of viruses are sprayed into the air, you’d think you will catch the infection — may be, a ‘bad’ cold, because a cold is never ‘good.’ Everyone has breathed in the sneeze, as it were. However, in reality, just one or two of us may become ill — not everyone who was around.
People, who have an innate ‘susceptibility’ towards catching infections, so to speak, tend to get affected, because the offending microorganism finds ‘ideal’ growing conditions, or ‘soil,’ in them. This may not be the case with others, who are optimally healthy, with a ‘strong’ immune system. They ward off infections almost with impunity — without even realising it.
The credo holds good for epidemic illnesses too — because, epidemics affect such people who have a latent predisposition, or vulnerability, towards the given infection or illness. They do not ‘trouble’ others who have a ‘strong’ immunity. They won’t, likewise, affect your inner disposition to illness, if the ‘condition’ is treated suitably with homeopathic remedies, or when the illness is healed with their use. This is homeopathy’s greatest advantage — homeopathic remedies, as we all understand, ensure prevention, much before the offending ‘bug’ gets into your system.

June 27th 2013 - Lack of Iodine in pregnancy.

Research has warned that pregnant women in the UK are often not getting enough iodine in their diet.
A report published in the Lancet revealed that mothers who were deficient had children with a slightly lower IQ and worse reading scores in primary school.
Why it is an issue in pregnant women?
In pregnancy you need much more of the chemical than normal, because the thyroid needs to build enough hormones for both you and the foetus. Once the foetus's own thyroid is up and running, it still needs iodine, which can come only from the mother's diet. When the baby is born, the iodine will come from breast milk.
How common is deficiency?
The research showed that two out of three women were not getting enough iodine during their pregnancy. An expectant mum’s thyroid status is key to the mental and neurological development of the foetus and baby, particularly in the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy, when the baby’s thyroid hasn’t yet grown and is not making any thyroid hormone. The lesson to be learned is that women who may become pregnant need to ensure that they are getting sufficient iodine in the months before they conceive.
Where can you get iodine from?
In the UK the main source of iodine is milk. Other dairy products and fish are also great sources of iodine. June 27thResearchers said that three portions of milk or other dairy products a day and two portions of fish a week would be sufficient.
Iodine is also available in some mineral and vitamin supplements, and there is a good argument for taking a folic acid, vitamin D and iodine supplement such as Nutri's *Multi Essentials Pregnancy one a day multivitamin and mineral supplement (which contains these and other important vitamins and minerals), as an ideal supplement to be taking from at least three months before pregnancy (costs from just £18-95 + p&p).

May 24th. 2013 - The Swansea Baby Study

The Swansea Baby Study into allergic eczema and allergic reactions to common allergens.. .
With an ever increasing number of babies and young children suffering from allergies and conditions like allergic eczema; this new study is good news for parents wanting to do something to reduce the risk to their baby of developing an allergic reaction to common foods and other triggers.
The trial showed that taking a particular natural probiotic* daily during the last trimester of pregnancy, and then giving the same probiotic daily to their newborn babies for six months, made them 57% less likely to develop allergic eczema and 44% less likely to develop an allergic reaction to the common allergens including pollen (hay fever), cow's milk, egg and house dust mite.
The message is we can reduce the risk of our children suffering these complaints with a simple natural supplement! Add in homeopathic treatment for any family/genetic tendency to eczema/ asthma/ allergies, and the likelihood of our children suffering is very significantly reduced compared with those given no treatment. The particular probiotic* used in the trial costs less than £1.00 a day and is likely to have additional health benefits for both mother and baby. Older untreated children who have developed allergic eczema or allergies are also likely to benefit from similar treatment.
And just in case you need another reason to use them - Probiotics may help women regain their figures after pregnancy . . .
Probiotic supplements during the first trimester of pregnancy may help women lose weight after the infant’s birth, say findings presented at the European Congress on Obesity.
Finnish researchers report that supplements containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were associated with less central obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more or a waist circumference over 80 centimetres.
“The women who got the probiotics fared best. One year after childbirth, they had the lowest levels of central obesity as well as the lowest body fat percentage.”
Still on the subject of infants . . .
Researchers have found that mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy may lower the I.Q. levels of some children born in the UK.
A study of 1,000 families, published in the Lancet, showed lower IQs and reading scores in primary school pupils whose mother had had too little iodine during pregnancy. Academics advise women of child-bearing age to maintain iodine in their diets by eating dairy products and fish, but not to take seaweed pills, as they contain too much iodine, however. . .
The study showed that iodine deficiency was common - affecting two-thirds of women. So my recommendation would be to take a therapeutic multivitamin and mineral such as Pregnancy and Lactation Formula* or Multi Essentials Pregnancy* (depending on your dietary needs) which are designed to safely support all the nutritional requirements of a mother and baby during pregnancy and throughout breastfeeding, and so avoid what researchers said "may prevent a child reaching their full potential". Their advice, published on the British Dietetic Association website, recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women need 250 micrograms of iodine per day and other adults need 150mcg.
